چکیده

Eyckmans, Luc (Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Tex.), and Ralph Tompsett. In vivo studies on staphylococcal penicillinase. J. Bacteriol. 90:589-593. 1965.-The amounts of staphylococcal penicillinase present in tissue of mice with well-established infections due to penicillin-resistant staphylococci were determined. The data indicate that, in the presence of such infection, penicillinase can be found in amounts adequate to destroy large amounts of penicillin. These results are found in the absence of any conditions which are known to induce penicillinase. Although it has been generally assumed that penicillinase does account for the penicillin resistance of certain staphylococci in vivo, the data presented here document the quantitative aspects of this phenomenon, and indicate that the amounts of penicillinase produced are sufficient to account for the high degrees of resistance observed.

Interaction of Staphylococcal Penicillinase and 6-[D(-

Citri and Zyk (3) recently showed that the penicillinase of Bacillus cereus, on interaction with substrates, may yield conformational changes at the active site of the enzyme. Earlier studies by a number of investigators (1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 11) showed that penicillin analogues resistant to staphylococcal penicillinase, such as methicillin, may cause inactivation ofthe enzyme. In contrast, Richmond ...

Lysostaphin: an enzymatic approach to staphylococcal disease. II. In vivo studies.

Lysostaphin is a potent enzymatic anti-staphylococcal agent that lyses the cell walls of staphylococci in vitro. Studies described in the preceding paper demonstrated that lysostaphin rapidly killed staphylococci, was unaffected by human serum, and maintained its activity after prolonged incubation at body temperature.' Unlike the penicillins, lysostaphin was active in vitro against very large ...

Susceptibility of the "penicillinase-resistant" penicillins and cephalosporins to penicillinase of Staphylococcus aureus.

The activities of some semisynthetic penicillins and cephalosporins have been tested against clinical strains of Staphylococcus aureus. The apparent activity in vitro varies with the method of testing used. Determination of MICs using light inocula fails to detect the destructive effect of penicillinase on the antibiotic. This was, however, demonstrated reproducibly by the use of a technique in...

Increased staphylococcal penicillinase activity accompanying penicillin treatment of experimentally infected mice.

In a previous communication, experiments were reported which indicate that the basal (constitutive) level of penicillinase in pathogenic penicillin resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus can be inducibly elevated 10to 15-fold by in vitro exposure to penicillin under appropriate conditions (Geronimus and Cohen, 1957). If similar elevations in penicillinase activity are induced by penicillin ...

Lincomycin in the treatment of penicillin-resistant staphylococcal infections in children.

Lincomycin, a new antibiotic chemically distinct from those currently available, was first introduced into the United Kingdom in 1963. Its spectrum of activity is confined mainly to staphylococci (including penicillinase-producing strains), haemolytic streptococci, pneumococci, and C. diptheriae (Lewis, Clapp, and Grady, 1962), and the minimum inhibitory concentration for most strains of these ...
